Of course, we know that plants are able to make their own food by capturing the energy from sunlight to convert carbon dioxide and water into sugar (i.e. photosynthesis). But, in order to stay healthy and bear flowers and fruit, they take additional nutrients out of the soil.
Unfortunately, most soils don’t provide all the nutrients plants need to reach their full potential. Most growing mixes you can buy only contain enough nutrients for six weeks’ growth.
That means it’s up to us to feed plants with the nutrients they need to stay healthy and grow to their fullest potential.
What to Feed Your Plants
Plants need a mixture of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), and other micronutrients in order to grow healthy and lush. Many of these nutrients are naturally present in soil, but over time they get depleted and need to be replaced.
Nitrogen for Leaf Growth
Nitrogen is essential for fueling new growth, particularly leaf and stem growth. Plants absorb more nitrogen than any other element, which is why nitrogen deficiency is one of the most common nutritional problems affecting plants. Most soils are low in nitrogen because it’s a water-soluble nutrient that gets washed away by rain or gets used up by plants and microbes.
Phosphorus for Root Growth
Phosphorus stimulates root growth and helps plants transfer energy between their roots, leaves, and flowers. Sometimes phosphorus is present in the soil, but is not available to plants due to soil temperature, microbial activity, or the pH of the soil. Phosphorus can also help speed up flowering and fruiting.
Potassium for Fruit Growth
Potassium fuels plant metabolism and increases the size and quality of fruits and flowers. Potassium also helps plants move water, nutrients, and carbohydrates from one area to another and is responsible for stimulating early growth, improving hardiness, and increasing resistance to pests and diseases.
